Death*24 November 1542Solway Moss, Cumberland, The Battle of Solway Moss (Sollom Moss) took place between the Rivers Lyne and Esk in the Parish of Arthuret, five and a half miles north of Carlisle between forces from England and Scotland when an army of 15,000-18,000 Scots advanced south.
The defending English force of just 3000 troops under the leadership of Sir Thomas Wharton defeated the Scots because of the lack of cohesion amid the Scottish leaders, combined with skilful use of troops and topography on the part of the English.3
